Artist's Description
Chalma has been known as a sacred and holy place since prehispanic times. It is here that a large single piece of obsidian crystal, in a cave beside the church's present location was revered by the Aztecas as a place where energy of the earth converged. The Spanish, observing it as a pagan type of worship, had the obsidian carved into a crucifix to create a so called miracle, or miraculously the large crystal turned into a crucifix. Next to the miracle at Guadalupe, Chalma is the second most sacred place in all of Mexico. Thousands make the pilgrimage from afar during holy week and Christmas.
